Justin Elie (1883-1931) was a Haitian composer and pianist. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire, he returned to Haiti to pursue a musical career, giving recitals in Cuba, Jamaica, St Thomas, Curaçao, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Elie moved to New York in 1921, where he hosted a weekly radio program, “The Lure of the Tropics.” He often conducted his own orchestral works on the radio show, and he also was an active composer for silent films and musical dramas. A great deal of his works were programmatic and inspired by the folklore of indigenous Americans or Africans in the diaspora.
